    ABOUT ROTARY

Rotary began as the world's first service club, The Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, on February 23, 1905. It was formed by Paul P. Harris, a young attorney who wished to recapture in a club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating the meetings among members' offices. While the original basis of Rotary was fellowship, service to others soon became its hallmark. Activities in a Rotary Club are divided into what is known as the four avenues of service: Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, and International Service.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF MADISON COUNTY

The Rotary Club of Madison County was chartered on February 4, 2004. The sponsoring Rotary Club was the Rotary Club of Asheville West. The Club meets for fellowship and stimulating guest speakers in Pittman Hall of Mars Hill College, Thursday mornings at 7:30 a.m. when college is in session and at the Café on Highway 213 in Marshall when the college is closed. We raise money for projects by hosting Hot Doggett (a 100-mile bike ride) and a Golf Tournament, and by maintaining a booth at the Madison County Heritage Festival.
